GDN Awards

Dear Colleagues,

CALL FOR APPLICATIONS
2010 Global Development Awards and Medals Competition

The Japanese Award for Most Innovative Development Project is a competitive grant program administered by the Global Development Network (GDN) that provides an opportunity to development projects being executed in the field with the ability to scale up their work through a grant of US$ 30,000 for the first prize, and US$ 5000 for the second.

The grants are awarded to organizations that are carrying out original and innovative work in the field to promote holistic development. GDN has certain criteria (see below) which competing projects are measured against. The winners are then chosen by an eminent jury at the final event. This event is also GDN's Annual Conference, with an audience of over 500 practitioners in the field of development to whom the finalists present their work. This year, the Twelfth Annual Global Development Conference will be held in Bogota, Columbia in January 2011. The travel and stay for finalists will be funded by GDN.

Some of the criteria that the project will be reviewed on

  • Creativity/Innovativeness: How is the project different from existing approaches? Note that transferring an approach to solve a common problem from one beneficiary group or from one geographic area to another is not considered innovative for the purpose of this award.
  • Social Impact and its Sustainability: Is the development impact sustainable? How does the organization assess the project's impact? Does it have clear and measurable results that will have a direct impact on improving individual's or communitie's livelihood?
  • Capacity Building: Does the project help strengthen capacity of the targeted population to continue with the work themselves in the long run? Has the targeted population demonstrated an increase in skill development or an increased willingness to learn new skills?
