ICPE PARTICIPATED IN ITU PLENIPOTENTIARY CONFERENCE PP-22 IN BUCHAREST

ICPE participated in the Plenipotentiary Conference of the ITU - the United Nations specialized agency for information and communication technologies (ICTs), held in Bucharest (Romania) from 26th September to 14th October 2022.

 

The conference brought together over 3,000 delegates, including government ministers or officials from 183 of ITU's 193 Member States, as well as international and regional organizations, academia, and private-sector representatives. Since December 2012 ICPE is Sector Member of the ITU-D (Development Sector). In such capacity, Dr Nenad Stankovic, ICPE Representative in Vienna, was representing the organization in Bucharest. The Final Act bringing together all the resolutions adopted at the Plenipotentiary, was signed by 157 Member States.

 

Key decisions agreed at the conference included resolutions on:

-Applying artificial intelligence (AI) technologies for good.

-Confidence-building and sustainable development in outer space.

-Empowering women and girls through digital transformation.

-Frequency assignments by military radio installations for national defense services.

-How new technologies can mitigate, rather than exacerbate, the climate crisis.

-How technologies can protect against global pandemics.

-The Internet of Things (IoT) for smart and sustainable cities and communities.

 

Dr Stankovic had great opportunity to meet delegates from numerous countries like Nigeria, Kenya, South Africa, Rwanda, Tunisia, Zambia, Somalia, UAR, Quatar, Serbia, Romania, France, Germany, Switzerland, Turkey, U.S., Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Japan, Brazil and Colombia. Also he presented briefly ICPE programs and planned activities to new appointed SG and Director of BDT as well as discuss modalities of continuing cooperation between two organizations according to the new approved key decisions by PP. It was appreciated by ITU representatives, and it was agreed to continue discussions about mutual cooperation and important matters for both organizations. ITU's next Plenipotentiary Conference will take place in Doha, Qatar, in 2026.
