ICPE took part in the ITU Council Meeting held in Geneva (Switzerland) from 4th to 14th June 2024.
Since December 2012, ICPE has been a Sector Member of the ITU-D (Development Sector). In this role, and serving as an observer, Dr. Nenad Stanković, the ICPE Representative in Vienna, represented the organization in Geneva.
During the Council meeting, Dr. Stankovic had the valuable opportunity to meet with Mr. Tomas Lamanauskas, ITU’s Deputy Secretary-General; Dr. Cosmas Luckyson Zavazava, Director of ITU’s Telecommunication Development Bureau (BDT); Dr. Bilel Jamoussi, Deputy Director of ITU’s Telecommunication Standardization Bureau (TSB); as well as Ms. Valentina Stadnic and Mr. Elind Sulmina from the European Office.

A shared desire for closer cooperation between ICPE and ITU’s sectors was expressed in the discussions, particularly in the application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies and digital innovations for the prosperity of societies, as well as for sustainable cities and communities. A plan for mutual activities in 2025 will be developed in alignment with the needs and priorities of both ICPE and ITU Member States.

The European Office presented new-created platform “Accelerating the digital transformation of government services” and invited ICPE to attend Global Innovation Forum which will be held from 28th to 30th October 2024 in Valetta (Malta).

Besides ITU representatives, Dr Stanković met delegates from South Africa, Tanzania, Ghana, Romania, Bulgaria, Switzerland, China, Mexico, Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Thailand.

On 12th of June, Mr António Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations, visited ITU headquarters in Geneva and addressed the ITU Council meeting. In his speech Mr Guterres underlined that “AI is the biggest revolution since the invention of internet – perhaps since the second industrial revolution” and expressed expectation that “ITU’s key role in the digital space will be rightly highlighted by Member States in the Compact.”
